WELCOMING CEREMONY - THE HONOURABLE JUSTICE EDELMANN AND THE HONOURABLE JUSTICE GOMERY

The Honourable Chief Justice Marchand is pleased to advise that there will be a formal ceremony to welcome the Honourable Justice Peter Edelmann and the Honourable Justice Geoffrey Gomery to the Court of Appeal for British Columbia and the Court of Appeal of Yukon.

The welcoming ceremony will be held on Monday, January 27, 2025, at 4:15 p.m. in Courtroom 60 of the Vancouver Law Courts.

JUDICIAL RETIREMENT - MADAM JUSTICE MARY V. NEWBURY

The Honourable Madam Justice Mary V. Newbury retired from the Court of Appeal for British Columbia and the Court of Appeal of Yukon on November 26, 2024. Justice Newbury was appointed to the BC Supreme Court in 1991 and the Court of Appeal in 1995. As a trial judge, Justice Newbury was recognized for her sympathetic understanding of the litigants before her, and for her unparalleled intellect. Those traits continued to define her work on the Court of Appeal. The Court of Appeal extends its deepest gratitude for Justice Newbury's commitment to justice and wishes her the best for her retirement.

JUDICIAL CLERKSHIP PROGRAM INFORMATION SESSIONS

This fall the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court are hosting in-person and virtual information sessions about the judicial clerkship program. These sessions aim to foster learning and connection between judges, law clerks, and students interested in learning more about the judicial clerkship experience.

The following sessions will take place in-person at BC Law Schools:

• UVic Faculty of Law – October 8 from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm.
• Allard Hall – October 15 from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm.
• TRU Faculty of Law – November 12 from 1:00 pm to 1:45 pm.

There will also be two sessions that will take place online:

• Indigenous law student communities - October 31 from 12:40 pm to 1:20 pm PST. Click here to register.
