PUBLIC STATEMENT BY THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF BRITISH COLUMBIA REGARDING SEPTEMBER 30, NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION
The Court of Appeal for British Columbia recognizes the third annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which takes place Saturday, September 30, 2023. The day is an opportunity to reflect on the tragic and painful history of residential schools and the continuing intergenerational trauma caused by the residential school system. It is a chance to honour residential school Survivors, their families, and their communities, and to remember the children who did not come home. The day encourages us to recommit to reconciliation and to consider our responsibilities relating to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's calls to action, and other guide posts that advance the ongoing process of reconciliation.
As September 30 falls on a weekend this year, the Court will be closed on Monday, October 2, 2023 to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
