ANNOUNCEMENT - R. v. BASI, VIRK & BASI - PUBLICATION BAN

The accused in this proceeding have elected to be tried by judge and jury. Accordingly, Madam Justice MacKenzie has issued a publication ban order pursuant to s. 648 of the Criminal Code and the Court's inherent jurisdiction. Section 648 is an automatic publication ban which expires when the jury retires to consider its verdict. The Court's inherent jurisdiction was invoked to cover the period from when the jury retires to consider its verdict to when the jury renders its verdict.

The publication ban prohibits the publication in any document or broadcast or transmission of evidence, submissions, rulings and Reasons for Judgment given in this proceeding in the absence of the jury. This publication ban will expire when the jury renders its verdict.

As a result of this publication ban order, all of the rulings and Reasons for Judgment which were previously published on the Court's website have been removed. These rulings and Reasons for Judgment will be re-published when the publication ban expires.

NOTICE: PRACTICE DIRECTION - CRIMINAL PRE-TRIAL CONFERENCE PILOT PROJECT - MARCH 1, 2010

Associate Chief Justice Dohm issued a Practice Direction today which establishes a pilot project for criminal pre-trial conferences that will be implemented in Vancouver, New Westminster, Chilliwack and Kamloops on March 1, 2010. The purpose of the Criminal Pre-Trial Conference Pilot Project is to improve the orderly and efficient scheduling and conduct of criminal trials and pre-trial applications by improving the effectiveness of pre-trial conferences. The Criminal Pre-Trial Conference Pilot Project will take effect on March 1, 2010.

ANNOUNCEMENT

The Supreme Court of British Columbia announces with deep sadness the death of the Honourable John C. Bouck on January 18, 2010 who was a member of this Court from 1974 to 2006. The Honourable Mr. Bouck had a distinguished career both at the bar and on the bench and was known for his contributions to the civil and criminal procedure through his work on BC Annual Practice, BC Annual Criminal Practice, Canadian Criminal Jury Instructions and Civil Jury Instructions. The Court extends its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the Honourable Mr. Bouck.
