CRIMINAL PRACTICE DIRECTION - COMPLEX CRIMINAL CASES
Associate Chief Justice Cullen has issued CPD - 3 - Complex Criminal Cases. CPD-3 describes the process by which the Court will manage large or complex criminal cases that show a potential to occupy a very significant amount of court time or to risk delays in reaching and concluding the trial. The new process for complex criminal cases involves case management for each such case from a very early stage, the assignment of a case management judge who will conduct periodic case management conferences. The case management judge will also conduct application screening conferences to determine which, if any, voir dires or pre-trial applications will be heard, the timelines for notice and other procedural steps, the general form of the evidence in the hearings of the voir dires and pre-trial applications, and the schedule for those hearings and for the trial. The practice direction is the result of extensive consultations with the bar. CPD-3 will come into effect on September 1, 2017.

CRIMINAL PRACTICE DIRECTION - SCHEDULING CONFLICTS BETWEEN THE PROVINCIAL COURT AND THE SUPREME COURT
Associate Chief Justice Cullen has issued CPD - 2 - Scheduling Conflicts between the Provincial Court and the Supreme Court. CPD-2 sets out guidelines to govern scheduling conflicts which arise between the Provincial Court and the Supreme Court. CPD-2 came into effect on June 6, 2017.

CHIEF JUSTICE ISSUES NEW ADMINISTRATIVE NOTICE - EFFECTIVE JUNE 12, 2017
Chief Justice Hinkson has issued Administrative Notice 14: Cover Page Requirements for Application Records, Petition Records Trial Briefs, Case Plan Proposals, Notices of JCCs and Written Submissions, which will take effect on June 12, 2017. AN-14 sets out the procedure which must be followed when filing documents with the court registry.

JUDICIAL RETIREMENT -THE HONOURABLE MADAM JUSTICE ELIZABETH A. ARNOLD-BAILEY
The Supreme Court of British Columbia announces that the Honourable Madam Justice Arnold-Bailey retired from the Supreme Court of British Columbia at New Westminster on May 31, 2017. Madam Justice Arnold-Bailey was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2005.

JUDICIAL RETIREMENTS
The Supreme Court of British Columbia announces that the following retirements:
The Honourable Mr. Justice Ian B. Josephson retired from the Supreme Court of British Columbia at New Westminster on April 22, 2017. Mr. Justice Josephson was appointed to the County Court in 1989 and to the Supreme Court in 1990.
The Honourable Madam Justice M. Marvyn Koenigsberg retired from the Supreme Court of British Columbia at Vancouver on March 26, 2017. Madam Justice Koenigsberg was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1992
The Honourable Madam Justice Wendy J. Harris retired from the Supreme Court of British Columbia at Vancouver on April 30, 2017. Madam Justice Harris was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2013.

SUPERIOR COURTS JUDICIARY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND SENIOR COUNSEL
The British Columbia Superior Courts Judiciary welcomes the appointment of Heidi McBride to the position of Executive Director of Judicial Administration and Senior Legal Counsel. The appointment is effective June 1, 2017. She replaces Frank C. Kraemer, QC, who is retiring on June 2, 2017.
